Rolfing and Structural Integration

Rolfing® is a progressive, systematic approach to releasing patterns of stress and impaired function from the body through hands-on physical manipulation and education. Rolfing was developed over the course of 50 years of research by Biochemist, Dr Ida P Rolf.

Rolfing is sometimes referred to as Structural Integration, and Structural Integration is is generic term used for the type of therapy the was taught by Dr Rolf.

Rolfing focuses on the network of fibrous connective tissue called fascia, that envelopes every muscle, muscle group and organ. Its role in the body is to protect and support muscles and organs. In its healthy state, fascia is elastic, moving freely with muscles and bones. When subjected to trauma or prolonged stress, the fascia begins to lose its elasticity, becoming shorter and more dense. It can contract the muscles and pulls joints out of alignment. A body out of alignment is a body that does not function at its best, a body that feels old or a body in pain.

By returning elasticity to the fascial network, this work guides your body to a natural ease of flexibility, resiliency, balance and energy.

Research has demonstrated that Rolfing creates a more efficient use of the muscles, allow the body to conserve energy and create more economical and refined patterns of movement. Research also shows that these modalities significantly changes the body structure and reduces chronic stress.

People seek Rolfing as a way to ease pain and chronic stress and improve performance in their professional and daily activities. The benefits, for clients of any age are:

Larry Dossey MD writes, "There is one major reason to take Rolfing seriously: it works. Not only can it dramatically change people's bodies, it can transform their lives as well. Rolfing is powerful stuff."

Rolfing® Movement Integration and Education

This work teaches clients to recognize patterns of holding and movement which create stress, pain and waste energy in their daily and special activities. Clients gain a greater awareness of their bodies and experience new ways of being and moving with greater ease and balance. It is a process of education, exploration, discovery and transformation. It can be done with or apart from Rolfing Structural Integration.

Only practitioners trained and certified by The Rolf Institute of Structural Integration are qualified to use the name Rolfer and the Rolfing® service mark.
